My Doula tips for keeping cool during pregnancy and for newborns:
So the big question how do you keep sun safe and cool when your expecting a baby or have a little one?
Here are my tips for comfort and sun safety-
Pregnancy and caring for a new-born are incredibly special times, but they also come with their own set of challenges, especially when it comes to staying cool and comfortable during hot weather we arnt really used to much of that in Cheshire.
High temperatures can lead to dehydration, overheating, and increased discomfort for both mums-to-be and their little ones. Here are some practical tips from me your local doula and parent supporter to help you keep cool and safe during pregnancy and in caring for your newborn.
Staying Cool During Pregnancy
1. Hydrate Frequently
Drinking plenty of water is essential. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses daily, and increase intake if you're sweating more than usual. You can also enjoy unsweetened fruit juices and electrolyte drinks to replenish lost minerals.
2. Dress Lightly
Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting, and breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Light-coloured clothing reflects heat better than dark colours, helping keep your body cooler.
Don't forget your big hat!
3. Find Shade and Cool Areas.
Limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Seek shade under trees or umbrellas and ensure indoor spaces are well-ventilated. Using fans or air conditioning can significantly reduce indoor temperature.
4. Take Cool Showers
Cool showers or baths can help lower your body temperature. Applying a damp, cool cloth to your forehead, neck, or wrists can provide quick relief from heat. Using a bowl of cool water to soak your feet in can also be very relaxing & cooling.

5. Rest Frequently
Pregnancy increases your body's vulnerability to heat. Take regular breaks and avoid strenuous activities during hotter parts of the day. It's not always easy to get some rest or down time try talking to your employer.
Keeping Your New-born Cool and Comfortable
1. Dress Them Appropriately
Use lightweight, breathable clothing in lighter colours. Avoid overdressing your baby, check if they seem warm by feeling their chest or back.
We often use the one more layer than us, striping down to vertical or even nappies is ok in the heat.
2. Keep the Environment Cool
Maintain a comfortable room temperature, ideally between 68-72°F (20-22°C). Use fans or air conditioning safely, ensuring airflow isn't directly blowing on your baby.
3. Use Light Bedding
Opt for lightweight, breathable blankets or swaddle your baby in thin fabrics. Avoid heavy or multiple layers.

4. Offer Frequent Feeding and Hydration.
Breast milk provides sufficient hydration for babies under six months who are exclusively breastfed. This means you don't need to offer any other water.
While formula provides the necessary nutrition, it's important to ensure they are adequately hydrated. In hot weather, they may need small amounts of cooled, boiled water to supplement their milk intake.
Look out for signs of dehydration such as dry mouth or fewer wet nappies.
5. Create a Cool Sleep Environment.
Place your baby's cot away from direct sunlight. Using a fan (with caution and out of reach) or cooling devices can help maintain a comfortable sleeping area.
General Safety Tips for Hot Weather
Monitor for Signs of Overheating: For pregnant women, symptoms include dizziness, nausea, or excessive sweating. For babies, look for fussiness, lethargy, or red, hot skin.

So staying cool during pregnancy and for your new-born involves proper hydration, comfortable clothing, and creating a safe, cool environment. It can be useful to explore your sun cream options by checking the ratings on the back and making sure to reapplying often helps stop your skin burning. By taking these steps, you can enjoy the summer months safely and comfortably, making this time joyful and stress-free for both mother and baby.
